HUII or the Harvard US-India Initiative is a student run organization that aims to create dialogue between Indian and American youth to address India’s most pressing social, economic and environmental issues today.

This year Harvard US-India Initiative hosted its international conference in Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay, theme of the 2012 international conference was Entrepreneurship and Innovation : Bridging the Gap Between Tradition and Modernity. The conference not only aimed to inspire students’ minds towards social entrepreneurship, but to also actively involve them in solving the US and India’s most intractable problems by devoting sufficient time to a well-developed case-study advised by a slew of academics.
In 2011, HUII hosted its first international conference in New Delhi on energy, education, women’s empowerment, social innovation and a case study on the Yamuna River.
This was a three days event, some particular themes were touched upon during the three days of the event.
“The Harvard initiative this year included a conference with all participants networking in a close-knit session, sharing their experiences and ideas. This was then followed by a play which was actually an introduction play called “Ma Mujhe Math Maaro. The play on female infanticide was very well done and sent a clear message to the audience. It covered the core of the issue as to why there is so much hatred for a female child and why she is unwanted. It covered the issue of dowry and how a girl child is a liability, rather perceived as one,” said a student form the Entrepreneurship cell, IIT Bombay.
Games on social media, the varieties they offer, their financial viability and the engineering prowess involved in them was discussed by Mr Steven Lurie, General Manager at Zynga Game Network. “His talk was very informative and a lot of fun. The fact that we got a gaming brain from Zynga was itself a huge high for us,” said another student.
This was followed by a team-networking activity. “We were divided into teams of 10-15 people each and were asked to discuss health and education in the two countries – to compare the two countries on these two subjects. The discussion was very fruitful. We learnt a lot from each other as each team has members from US and India,” said a student.
A second year student said – “it was super fun three days. All the presentations, events and activities were so informative. I loved particularly the gaming speech. I want to develop my own mobile games and social media games and apps one day and I was just very happy it happened on campus. It has inspired me a lot. I could also discuss my ideas during the session with other students and now I am all set to work on my ideas. Because I have understood the real scope.”
