On Saturday evening a girl student of Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) was admitted to Rajawadi hospital in an unconscious state following drug overdose. Reportedly a male acquaintance of the girl, who is a non-faculty staffer of the institute, has been handed over to the police for allegedly spiking her drink with the intention of sexually assaulting her.
According to sources, the girl was brought to the hospital by some security guards of IIT-B.“The girl was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state and as per the norm, she was immediately referred to a gynaecologist to check if she was sexually assaulted. The gynae has ruled it out. However, she was found to be high on drugs but it remains to be confirmed if she consumed the drug herself or was drugged,” said a source from Rajawadi hospital on condition of anonymity.
When asked if consumption of drug had been confirmed, the source said, “The police will collect her stomach wash and send it for forensic tests.”
IIT-B sources said the accused had called the girl to his house on campus on the pretext of introducing her to his wife. The victim knew him as they played badminton together. She invited a friend, who did not accompany her. At his house, she found his wife not at home. He offered her coffee, which made her feel unwell.
The victim called a friend saying she wasn’t feeling well. Soon after, her friends on the campus reached the staff member’s house and found the girl unconscious in the bedroom. The accused, who by then was in his office, said he knew nothing about the incident.
